563 Walters Avenue, Johnstown, PA 15904. PennDOT's location information specifically notes using the Walters Avenue exit from PA 56. That matters when you are heading to the centre for a lesson or your test: allow time to arrive, find the entrance and settle before the appointment rather than making the first few minutes of your drive a rush.
Drive the route without worrying about being perfect. Notice where the road opens up, where traffic builds, where your view is restricted and where you need to plan earlier.
Have your accompanying driver give directions only. Treat every move-off, turn, stop sign and change of position as if an examiner were beside you.
If one junction or section keeps causing trouble, stop repeating the whole route. Go back and work on that section until the observation, speed and position are right.
There are eight routes for a reason. A learner who can drive one memorised circuit is not necessarily test-ready. Work through different routes so your driving decisions are based on what you see.
The centre is on Walters Avenue with access from the PA 56 corridor. Practising here means being ready to move between the immediate test-centre environment and surrounding roads without letting the change in road character alter your standard of observation or control. On a broader road, make progress when conditions allow; on tighter or busier sections, reduce speed early enough that you still have time to look and decide.
One habit I would watch closely is the approach to junctions. Get the braking done progressively, look early, then make the final decision from a speed that gives you time. Learners often arrive too quickly, stop abruptly and then try to make up for it by rushing the observation. A calmer approach usually produces a much better decision.
Your package contains eight predefined Johnstown driving test routes. Each route is supplied with Google Maps GPS navigation and a printable road map, so you can follow it in the car and review it away from the car.
Moving off: mirrors and blind-spot observation before the car moves. Speed: read the road and signs rather than copying the vehicle in front. Position: keep a sensible line through bends and turns without drifting. Stops: make the stop definite where required and leave yourself a useful view. Directions: if you miss an instruction, continue safely; never make a sudden move just to rescue a turn.
Every Johnstown route pack also includes the Pennsylvania Driving Test Guide and the 114-page What the Hell? Confessions of a Driving Instructor — American Edition. They are included with the route package at no extra charge.
